TAB To Host Virtual Job Fair in 2021

To provide our members with a new avenue for their employment outreach program, the TAB is excited to announce that it will be facilitating a virtual job fair in 2022.

As you well know, outreach initiatives are a major aspect of the recruitment requirement of the FCC’s Equal Employment Opportunity program. Unfortunately, Covid-19 has seriously impacted the ability to host traditional job fairs, particularly at educational institutions.  Participation in a virtual job fair can provide your station with a common-sense approach to a new and much easier to execute recruiting tool during this pandemic and beyond. While your station works to fulfill the required regulation, the virtual job fair serves as further evidence of outreach effort to educate the public about the positions available not only at your station. In keeping with your efforts to find quality staff, a virtual job fair can also provide general information about the kinds of careers that are available in broadcasting.

Just as you would participate in a physical job fair, there are some requirements. Participating stations must register with our association; promote the event on participating stations; maintain a record of applicants; and answer any questions visitors to the job fair might ask of you.  And, like participating in a physical job fair, your station will be provided a listing of all the applications, website statistics, as well as a letter of participation that includes any active jobs postings at the conclusion of a successful week to place in your EEO file.

Although the FCC has weighed in on the efficacy of broad outreach through the internet, TAB cautions everyone that we cannot offer an absolute guarantee on what the FCC will or will not count toward EEO credit, even in these difficult times for public gatherings.  Nonetheless, by participating in virtual job fairs throughout your licensing period, you may be able to count some of those events as part of the third prong (supplemental efforts) of the FCC’s Options Menu. Station participants are encouraged to consider virtual job fairs a supplemental effort to educate the public about the job positions available at their station and the qualifications necessary to fill those positions.

TAB will be making two Virtual Job Fairs free to members, and conduct one fair the week of March 21 – 25, 2022,  in order to provide sufficient opportunity for participation by all members (so not all the same stations will necessarily participate each time).

More information will follow in the coming weeks, but we encourage you to mark your calendars for our first event in coming in April.  In the meantime, you can post your job openings on the national broadcast jobs board at www.CareerPage.org. If you are new to CareerPage.org, simply click on the “Need to Register” link under the Member Login tab. Use the access code 3Sdg54 to complete your registration.

Political File/Advertising Webinar

November 2023

A recording of the webinar is available here: https://youtu.be/zUzRX9W6aJIThe slide deck from the webinar may be downloaded here: https://www.michiganmedia.com/assets/pdf/State+Association+Political+Refresher+-+Nov+2023

Even in this most unusual time, the FCC has continued to enforce its EEO rules, reviewing a station’s compliance both in connection with its license renewal and through periodic audits. Stations still need to engage in wide dissemination of information about job openings and engage in specified outreach activities designed to educate their communities about broadcast employment and to train employees for advancement in their broadcast careers, even if they have no job openings. David Oxenford of the Washington DC law firm Wilkinson Barker Knauer reviewed all of the FCC’s obligations and how you can meet those obligations even while social distancing in this webinar.

Do you know who you need to sell to, the rates that you can charge, and all the paperwork that is required – including the latest on the online political file? In a 90 minute webinar on November 18, David Oxenford of the DC law firm Wilkinson Barker Knauer LLP will be joined by the staff of the FCC’s Office of Political Programming – Bobby Baker, Gary Schonman and Sima Nilsson – to provide a refresher on the rules that you need to know to prepare for the 2022 election season.

Copyright Issues for Broadcasters

David Oxenford, Wilkinson, Barker, Knauer

Thursday, August 19, 2021 | 1:00 p.m. – 2:00 p.m. Eastern

Whether on-air or online, broadcasters constantly face copyright issues in their operations. Music licensing is always so confusing – who are all these organizations that want money and why should I pay them? How much will my radio station pay to make its programming available on various digital platforms? Can I use pictures or content from other sources in my newscast without getting permission from the originator? What can I put in a podcast without permission – or what can I use in a commercial without getting into trouble? How about online – can pictures on my website get me into trouble – and how about material that is posted on my website by users?

For those who missed it, or may wish to review it again, a recording can be accessed at the following link: https://youtu.be/V8kPWbdcSOI
